Our office enjoys a strong collaborative relationship with many healthcare professionals including Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Pediatricians, Neurologists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, etc. At the core of these extensive relationships are the many patients that we have co-managed. Dr. Knapp is board certified in vision therapy by the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD). COVD has a white paper that addresses referral protocol for specialized optometric care found here. We adhere strictly to these COVD protocols as our experience has been that patients have the best outcome when there is collaboration between the referring healthcare professional and our practice. We are highly appreciative of the confidence that our colleagues place in our practice.
In some instances, a referral may be driven by patient history, such as academic difficulty, or for specific services such as a visual perceptual evaluation or a visual evoked potential. To help your patients understand why they are being referred to our office, it is best to advise them that they are being referred for specialized testing. We are happy to supply you and your office with referral information that includes referral forms and a variety of patient education literature related to specialized testing as well as vision therapy related conditions.
Typical clinical referral categories are:
- Strabismus
- Amblyopia
- Convergence Insufficiency
- Ocular Motor
Some patients will have visual sensory sensitivities that can be immediately improved through a lens or prism prescription. Others will require active office-based optometric vision therapy. Since we do not have an optical dispensary, there are no optical services rendered in our office. If we feel that a lens prescription is indicated, the patient will be referred back for those services.
